MWM Distributor Electrosystems Co. Ltd. Installs 10-MW Biogas Power Plant Generating Electricity for Landfill Site and Local Grid in Timokhovo, Russia
Schwaz, April 14, 2022
The biogas plant “Timokhovo” is located on a landfill site for municipal solid waste, about 40 km east of Moscow. The main purpose of this power station is to process organic waste from the landfill into electrical and thermal energy, leaving an almost odorless, anaerobically recycled mass behind.
For this project, the landfill operator made use of the expertise of Electrosystems Co. Ltd., headquartered in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since 2009, the official MWM distributor Electrosystems has developed superior know-how in the field of distributed power solutions equipped with MWM gas engines.
Electrosystems engineers redesigned parts of their proven CHP container solution for the Timokhovo biogas plant to ensure stable, reliable, and long-term operation. A total of five containerized units based on MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas engines were produced at their facilities in Pushkin and were delivered to their final destination in Timokhovo. Each of the TCG 2020 V20 gas engines with an electrical output of 2 MW was produced as a biogas variant in Mannheim, Germany, where engine components such as the gas mixer, cylinder heads, and turbochargers are optimized for this particular gas type.
Use of Methane for Sustainable Power Production in Distributed Power Plants
In summer 2021, following a preliminary check, the biogas plant was ready to go live and was commissioned. The generated electric power of 10 MW is mainly used for the landfill’s own energy consumption, while the surplus electricity is sold and fed into the local grid. The combined heat and power (CHP) operation of MWM gas engines allows the simultaneously produced thermal power to be used to achieve optimum operating conditions for the entire biogas processing, including the necessary heating of the digestion tanks and biogas collectors throughout the year. Since its go-live, the new plant in Timokhovo has been operating as planned, generating electricity for the landfill’s facilities and the local grid while providing the heat required for the digestion process.
