For many years, Central Asia has been one of the world’s fastest growing regions. This is also reflected in the ongoing high demand for independent, distributed energy solutions with MWM gas engines. For this reason, an MWM office was opened in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in order to facilitate the exchange of information with existing and future customers and to expand activities in the region.
The new QR codes on the MWM gas engines take customers and distributors to an online platform that provides relevant service documents. Existing plants with MWM gas engines can be retrofitted with the QR codes.
MWM solutions provider İltekno has implemented another cogeneration project with MWM gas engines in Uzbekistan. To supply heat and power to the district of Chilanzar, İltekno has installed two MWM TCG 3020 V20 gas engines for the energy company JSC Thermal Power Plants.
MWM has expanded its offering in the market segment of gas engines with a 60 Hz variant of the TCG 3020 V20 gas generator set, thereby providing customers with further application options in distributed energy generation.
In a district heating power plant in Szydłowiec, Poland, an MWM TCG 3016 V16 gas engine generates heat and electricity, which is fed into the public grid.
MWM gas engines have been running in Ukraine for more than 20 years. During the “ReBuild Ukraine” exhibition held in Warsaw in November 2023, we were able to discuss the current opportunities and difficulties of the Ukrainian energy market with Dmytro Isachenko, General Manager of the MWM service provider Interenergo, which has been rolling out energy projects in Ukraine since 2005.
MWM looks back on the financial year 2023. The year’s highlights included the celebration of “100 years MWM brand”, the introduction MWM engine series for hydrogen operation with an admixture of up to 25 vol%, and the global implementation of projects for distributed energy generation with MWM gas engines.
In 2021, company TEDOM installed a packaged TCG 3016 V12 as part of a modernization program of the district heating system in the city of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav, Czech Republic. Since then, the generator set has been operating successfully for 12 to 16 hours a day in winter and about 6 hours a day in summer.
New engines of the MWM TCG 3020 series can now be operated with a hydrogen admixture of up to 25 vol%. Existing plants with TCG 3020 gas engines can be upgraded with the MWM 25H2 kit for operation with a hydrogen admixture of up to 25 vol%.
Turkish EPC contractor and MWM distributor İltekno has been active in Uzbekistan for many years and is known especially for the construction and commissioning of Uzbekistan’s first cogeneration power plant with gas engines in 2019. On July 26, 2023, delegates of CES, MWM, and İltekno met at their headquarters in Istanbul to sign an MWM Solutions Provider agreement for Uzbekistan, expanding and deepening the successful partnership that started 21 years ago.
In 2021, the Rúbanisko II power plant went live in Lučenec, Slovakia, supplying heat and electricity to the local population. Since then, the TCG 3016 V16 has generated more than 10,000 MWh of power.
MWM has introduced new TCG 3016 gas engines that support hydrogen admixture of up to 25 vol%. Existing plants with TCG 3016 gas engines can be upgraded with the MWM retrofit kit for operation with a hydrogen admixture of up to 25 vol%.
The newly installed biogas plant in Lozovo, North Macedonia, with its two TCG 2020 V12 gas engines is able to supply approximately 4,000 households with electrical energy. The MWM gas engines used for this project were delivered in their highly efficient 1-MW variant. Fueled exclusively with renewables and organic waste, the engines also deliver 2.1 MW of thermal energy.
The website www.mwm.at has been launched to present customers of the MWM brand with an optimized platform for the Eastern European and Central Asian energy market. The launch was rolled out together with the team of MWM Austria GmbH, which is responsible for the markets in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (CIS).
In 2019, specialists from the Turkish EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contractor İltekno successfully commissioned a power plant for FT Textile Group LLC. This is the first cogeneration power plant based on gas engines in the country and provides secure power supply and low energy costs for the production facility near Namangan.
Despite global crises and the stress the employees were subject to due to the coronavirus pandemic, MWM was able to continue to deliver a fine business performance. For the brand, 2022 thus proved to be a productive financial year. Apart from the rollout of numerous energy projects around the globe, the main focus was on hydrogen as a clean fuel for MWM gas engines and cogeneration power plants and on the start of the 100th MWM brand anniversary celebrations.
This is the 100th year of the renowned engineering brand MWM, which has successfully secured a leading edge over its competitors and gained high recognition value. Caterpillar Energy Solutions celebrates this special brand anniversary with a dedicated MWM anniversary website, interviews conducted with brand experts, background information on the MWM brand, and a quiz about the past 100 years.
With its versatile MWM TCG 3020 V20 2MW gas engine, MWM expands its lineup of generator sets, offering customers a unit that delivers high efficiency under maximum performance in the 2 MWel segment.
The new online status monitoring system MWM Remote Asset Monitoring (RAM) is now also available for MWM gas engines with the digital power plant control TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management). Newly shipped gas engines with TPEM control are now delivered ready for MWM RAM activation. Existing plants can easily be upgraded with a retrofit kit.
In February 2022, two service teams of the MWM distributor TEDOM a.s. completed the general overhaul of two TCG 2032 V16 gas engines in just 15 working days. The customer appreciated the exemplary cooperation of the teams from five countries, which reduced the maintenance downtime to a minimum.
Commissioned in July 2021, the 10-MW biogas plant supplied to the Timokhovo landfill by Electrosystems Co. Ltd. generates electricity for the landfill and the local grid, while providing the heat required for the digestion process. The biogas plant uses the available methane for sustainable energy production instead of allowing uncontrolled decomposition of the waste and release of gases into the atmosphere.
In August 2021, Valdex Energetica LLC, one of Russia’s leading companies in the field of engineering, design, and maintenance of power generation plants, successfully commissioned the first stage of the new power plant for the Sukhonsky Cardboard and Paper Mill LLC. Since the go-live, the genset has reliably provided 4.3 MW of electrical energy.

On the occasion of MWM’s 150th anniversary, a tram has been decorated with a design in MWM blue, and posters have been put up in several street-facing windows, e.g. on Carl-Benz-Strasse in Mannheim. The MWM tram travels through the entire rnv network in Mannheim and surrounding areas.
The MWM TCG 3020 gas engines are now also available as V12 and V16. Thanks to the compact design, the new MWM gas engines deliver up to 18 percent more performance than the predecessor models, though their dimensions are almost identical.
The relaunched website of MWM appears in a new, fresh design. The graphical modifications and technical fine-tuning of the online presence have been implemented as part of the digital campaign on the occasion of the 150th anniversary under the motto “150 years of continuous innovation”.
By upgrading the engines of its biogas plant locations with eight containerized MWM cogeneration power plants and MWM TCG 3016 gas engines, the agricultural company Gebrüder Nooren GbR has doubled the installed electrical output of the existing plants. The generated power is fed into the public grid.
MWM Austria GmbH has received the international “Golden Lightning” award in Moscow at the VIII Distributed Power Generation — Great Achievements International Award in recognition of an energy project in Austria. With the new MWM Service Portal, MWM takes the next step on the path to digitization in the fields of service, marketing, and sales of innovative energy solutions. Smart production processes enable MWM partners to create individualized product catalogs with services for their customers on the basis of standardized print templates. The flyers can be designed and produced both for web and for print purposes.
MWM is further expanding its service offering by launching its own brand channel in the social networks Facebook and LinkedIn. On these digital platforms, MWM provides interesting information on MWM products, the latest industry news, and fascinating background stories.
MWM distributor MKS Group of Companies is setting up production facilities for modular power plants for distributed energy supply in the Malaya Sosnovka Industrial Innovation Park in the Russian region of Chelyabinsk. Additionally, a modular power plant will supply the residents of the industrial park with heat and power. The plans for the construction of another production site for modular power plants in the Moscow region are already in the pipeline.
MWM distributor MKS Group of Companies has commissioned a highly efficient energy center in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia. The modular power plant is equipped with an MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas engine and ensures uninterrupted energy supply for sensitive natural stone production and processing workflows. Additionally, the efficient, distributed energy generation concept enables the industrial enterprise to save two thirds of its previous energy costs.
A customer satisfaction survey conducted by MWM Service from April 2019 to February 2020 has delivered positive results and a satisfaction index of 98 percent. Last year, a new cogeneration power plant was opened for the Nadezhda smelting plant of UMMC-Steel Corp. in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russian Federation. For the first two episodes of the MWM service tutorial video series “Do it the smart way”, the independent international expert jury of the WorldMediaFestival 2020 honors Caterpillar Energy Solutions with the intermedia-globe Silver Award in the category “Training: Learning Programmes”. The German-language videos have been translated and dubbed in several languages.
When the cogeneration power plant was first set up in 2007, Dräger opted for reliable, efficient MWM engine technology in the form of a TCG 2020 V12. After 13 years of smooth operation, the core of the cogeneration power plant is now being replaced with an MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas genset with improved efficiency.
In 2019, official MWM distributor MKS Group of Companies successfully completed commissioning of the generating equipment at the power plant for the NLMK Ural (NLMK Group) enterprise in Russia. The new energy complex becomes the most powerful gas engine power plant in the district, reduces the enterprise’s production costs, and decreases the greenhouse gas emissions of the enterprise by 4,000 tons per year.
In the last phase of a three-phased project MWM completes the renewal of the Spanish wastewater treatment plant Viveros de la Villa in Madrid. For a higher efficiency of the cogeneration plant an MWM TCG 3016 V08 genset will be installed.
With its positive business performance and numerous trend-setting, award-winning innovations, 2019 was an outstanding year for MWM. The year was especially marked by the topics of energy security and sustainable energy generation as well as growing flexibilization of CHP plants.

On March 15, 2019, the new pellet plant of WUN Pellets GmbH went live in Wunsiedel, Upper Franconia. The 30-million-euro investment was officially inaugurated by Dr. Markus Söder, Bavaria’s Minister-President. Especially the sophisticated 3D animations and the soundtrack, which was composed especially for the video, earned the praise of the international expert jury.

The MWM TCG 2020 V16 power genset installed by the Munich City Utilities for the cogeneration power plant of the Munich Exhibition Grounds delivers improved efficiency, more flexibility, and better eco-compatibility for distributed energy generation. Due to the characteristics of renewable energies, many operators of gas-fired plants depend on flexible operation. To avoid supply fluctuations, it must be possible to start up power plants speedily. The MWM TCG 3016 gas engine represents an entirely new development in MWM’s CHP plant portfolio. The integrated digital plant control TPEM facilitates the installation and enables more flexible operation. In the field of natural gas and biogas operation, the TCG 3016 is the most efficient gas engine in its output class. In combination with a period of 80,000 operating hours (natural gas) or 64,000 operating hours (biogas) until the general overhaul, this makes the TCG 3016 a premium choice in terms of efficiency and cost savings.
