Modernization of a municipal boiler house in Poland: MWM TCG 3016 gas engine reduces carbon emissions by more than 6,000 t/year

In recent years, the generation of eco-friendly thermal energy has become an increasingly important topic in Poland. Due to the still widespread use of coal, Poland suffers from high air pollution levels. In addition to improving air quality, the efficiency of heat generation also needs to be increased. To modernize the heating system of the city of Szydłowiec, an MWM TCG 3016 V16 gas engine was installed at the local district heating power plant, which is operated by Ciepłownia Szydłowiec Sp. z o.o., in 2021.
The modernization was realized by the MWM key account TEDOM a.s. in cooperation with its long-standing Polish partner Zakład Innowacyjny technik energetycznych Promat Sp. z o.o. Previously, the Szydłowiec district heating plant operated with three technically outdated and environmentally unfriendly coal-fired boilers for hot water production. The aim of the modernization was to establish a more eco-friendly heat generation system, increase the overall efficiency of the production, and significantly reduce the costs of heat generation in the city.
MWM TCG 3016 V16 gas engine generates heat and electricity for the public grid
For this modernization project, an MWM TCG 3016 V16 gas engine was installed in a container from TEDOM. The high-quality, state-of-the-art QUANTO container solutions from TEDOM a.s. are fully pre-installed turnkey solutions that are produced at the company’s facilities near Prague, Czech Republic. The gas engine used in this project runs on natural gas and delivers an electrical output of 800 kW and an even higher thermal output. Since it was commissioned in January 2022, the MWM gas engine has been running continually, reducing carbon emissions by more than 6,000 t/year.
The heat generated by the CHP plant is fed into the district heating network of the city of Szydłowiec and the electricity into the national grid. Thanks to online monitoring of the boiler house, the CHP plant can be conveniently controlled remotely by the operator and can cooperate with other energy sources in the area for optimized consumption in order to reduce the overall environmental impact.
